Overview

Novaferon is a novel recombinant protein drug engineered by DNA shuffling of interferon alpha genes. It is not a naturally occurring protein but was designed to enhance antitumor and antiviral activities. Novaferon's mechanism of action involves binding to interferon receptor 2 (IFNR2), leading to the activation and regulation of multiple cellular immunity pathways. This results in broad-spectrum antiviral effects—including inhibition of viral entry, replication, assembly, and release—and potent antitumor activity through S phase cell cycle arrest, induction of apoptosis, and inhibition of tumor angiogenesis. Compared with recombinant human interferon alpha-2b (rhIFN-α2b), Novaferon demonstrates higher binding affinity for IFNR2 and activates additional immune-related genes not triggered by natural human interferons. It has been approved in China for the treatment of chronic hepatitis B and has shown efficacy against SARS-CoV-2 in clinical studies as well as promising results in cancer therapy[1][3][4][6][7].
