Overview

The Novartis acellular pertussis vaccine is an investigational protein subunit vaccine designed to prevent pertussis (whooping cough) caused by *Bordetella pertussis*. It is composed of three purified antigens: genetically detoxified pertussis toxin (PT), filamentous hemagglutinin (FHA), and pertactin (PRN). Unlike traditional acellular pertussis vaccines that use chemical detoxification (e.g., with formaldehyde), this vaccine utilizes a genetically modified version of the pertussis toxin that is inherently non-toxic while maintaining superior structural integrity and immunogenicity. Developed by Novartis Vaccines and Diagnostics, the vaccine has been evaluated in Phase 1 clinical trials (such as study V113_01) as both a standalone booster (aP) and as part of a combination tetanus-diphtheria-acellular pertussis (TdaP) booster in healthy adults.
