NovaSilk is a non-absorbable, sterile surgical suture composed of the organic protein fibroin, derived from the domesticated silkworm *Bombyx mori*. The manufacturing process involves the removal of natural waxes and sericin gums, followed by braiding and coating with silicone or wax to improve handling, knot security, and passage through tissue. While classified as a non-absorbable material, NovaSilk undergoes slow proteolytic degradation in vivo, which can lead to a gradual loss of tensile strength over time. It is primarily indicated for use in general soft tissue approximation and ligation, including specialized applications in cardiovascular, ophthalmic, and neurological surgery. Additionally, the name is associated with ultrapure silk fibroin biomaterials used as scaffolds in regenerative medicine and drug delivery systems.
