Overview

The Novavax H5N1 VLP vaccine is a recombinant nanoparticle vaccine candidate developed for immunization against highly pathogenic avian H5N1 influenza. Produced using a baculovirus expression system in Spodoptera frugiperda (Sf9) insect cells, the vaccine consists of virus-like particles (VLPs) that self-assemble from three key influenza proteins: hemagglutinin (HA), neuraminidase (NA), and matrix 1 (M1). These VLPs mimic the structural organization of the native influenza virus but lack the genetic material required for viral replication, rendering them non-infectious. To enhance immune responses, the vaccine is formulated with Novavax's proprietary saponin-based Matrix-M adjuvant. Clinical development, supported by the US Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA), has demonstrated that the vaccine is safe and immunogenic in humans, eliciting robust levels of neutralizing antibodies that show cross-reactivity against multiple H5N1 clades.
