NoveCite is an allogeneic cell therapy consisting of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) derived from induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs). Developed by a joint venture between MediciNova and Zhejiang DingTai Pharmaceutical Technology, it is primarily investigated for the treatment of Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS), including cases triggered by COVID-19. The therapy's mechanism of action involves potent immunomodulation; once administered, the MSCs migrate to sites of injury and inflammation where they release various paracrine factors. These factors work to suppress the systemic inflammatory response, often referred to as a cytokine storm, by reducing the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-6 and TNF-alpha. Additionally, NoveCite is designed to promote an anti-inflammatory environment that facilitates the repair of damaged lung tissue and improves alveolar fluid clearance. The use of iPSCs as a starting material allows for a more scalable, consistent, and high-purity manufacturing process compared to traditional bone marrow-derived MSCs.
