Novel boron carriers are a series of preclinical-stage boron-containing small molecules being developed by Hainan Meihao Xilin Biopharmaceutical (Hainan Poly Pharm) in partnership with the Institute of High Energy Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences. These molecules are designed to selectively accumulate in tumor cells to facilitate Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT). The mechanism involves delivering boron-10 isotopes to the tumor site; upon irradiation with thermal or epithermal neutrons, the boron-10 atoms undergo a nuclear fission reaction, releasing high-energy alpha particles and lithium nuclei. These particles travel only a few micrometers, effectively destroying the tumor cells from within while minimizing damage to adjacent healthy tissue. The program is currently in the preclinical stage, specifically lead compound (PCC) screening, for the treatment of various solid tumors including glioma, renal cancer, colon cancer, and cervical cancer.
