Noxytiolin is a local antibacterial and antimicrobial agent primarily used for the therapeutic irrigation of infected body cavities, such as the bladder and peritoneum, and as a spray for burns. Its mechanism of action is believed to involve decomposition in aqueous solution to release formaldehyde, which provides its antimicrobial effect. Noxytiolin belongs to the class of thioureas (organosulfur compounds) and is typically administered as an irrigation solution at concentrations between 1–2.5%. It has also been shown in vitro to inhibit thyroid hormone synthesis by interfering with iodide organification in thyrocytes[6][8].
