Overview
NP Thyroid is a prescription medication consisting of naturally derived desiccated thyroid extract (DTE) from porcine (pig) thyroid glands. It contains both levothyroxine (T4) and liothyronine (T3), the two primary hormones produced by the human thyroid gland. Each 60 mg tablet provides approximately 38 mcg of T4 and 9 mcg of T3. The drug is used as replacement or supplemental therapy for hypothyroidism of any etiology except transient hypothyroidism due to subacute thyroiditis. It is also indicated for suppressing pituitary TSH in the treatment or prevention of various types of euthyroid goiters—including nodular goiter, Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, multinodular goiter—and in managing certain cases of thyroid cancer. The mechanism involves direct hormone replacement to restore normal metabolic activity regulated by endogenous T4 and T3[1][2][4][6].
