NPI-002 is a novel, differentiated, slow-release small molecule being developed by Nacuity Pharmaceuticals for the treatment of cataracts. It is formulated as a sterile intravitreal implant designed to deliver the drug directly into the eye using a precision delivery system. The primary mechanism of action is antioxidant activity—NPI-002 targets oxidative stress, which plays a critical role in the onset and progression of cataracts. Preclinical studies have shown that NPI-002 inhibits oxidative-induced cataracts in ex-vivo rat and porcine lenses and demonstrates no cytotoxicity. The drug is currently being evaluated in a Phase 1/2 proof-of-concept clinical trial (NCT05026632) for its ability to delay cataract progression in patients undergoing vitrectomy[1][2][5][6][8].
