Drug intelligence / Profile preview
NPX-5 is a nature-derived psilocybin formulation developed by Psyence Australia for the treatment of adjustment disorder in patients with a cancer diagnosis. As the pharmacological component of psilocybin-assisted psychotherapy, NPX-5 functions as a prodrug that is converted in vivo to psilocin. Psilocin is a serotonergic psychedelic that primarily acts as an agonist at the 5-HT2A receptor, leading to altered states of consciousness and increased neuroplasticity. These effects are leveraged within a clinical setting to help patients process the psychological distress associated with a terminal or life-threatening illness. The drug is currently undergoing Phase 2b clinical evaluation to establish its safety and therapeutic potential in oncology-related palliative care.
