Overview
NRO-1 is a topically delivered small molecule drug developed as an ophthalmic nerve-rescue therapeutic for degenerative eye diseases. It acts as an agonist of glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) receptors, stimulating the release of GDNF to promote neurite elongation and inhibit semaphorin 3A activity. This mechanism is intended to support regeneration of corneal nerve cells and restore corneal function in conditions such as dry eye disease and neurotrophic keratitis. The drug offers advantages over existing therapies like Oxervate (cenegermin), including easier storage, topical delivery, and reduced pain or irritation upon administration. NRO-1 is being developed by Neuroptika under license from Senju Pharmaceutical[1][3][4].
