NRP290

NRP290 is a conditionally bioreversible derivative (CBD) of hydrocodone, developed by New River Pharmaceuticals using its proprietary Carrierwave technology. It is a small molecule prodrug designed to be abuse-resistant; the active hydrocodone is released only after oral administration through enzymatic cleavage in the gastrointestinal tract. This design aims to prevent the rapid onset of euphoria and potential for overdose associated with non-oral routes of administration, such as intranasal or intravenous use. NRP290 was evaluated in Phase II clinical trials for the management of acute pain. Following the acquisition of New River Pharmaceuticals by Shire in 2007, development of NRP290 was eventually discontinued as the company focused on other assets in its portfolio.
