Drug intelligence / Profile preview
NT-101 is a non-invasive, peptide-based ophthalmic solution developed by NexThera for the treatment of wet age-related macular degeneration (wet AMD). It is administered as an eye drop and utilizes a proprietary delivery platform that enhances ocular surface retention and improves drug delivery to retinal tissue, offering a safer and more convenient alternative to conventional intravitreal injections. The active ingredient is an endogenous peptide combined with a carrier protein. Mechanistically, NT-101 achieves dual action by inhibiting angiogenesis (the formation of new blood vessels) and protecting optic nerve cells through balanced modulation of angiogenic and anti-angiogenic factors. This approach aims to address both neovascularization and neuroprotection in wet AMD, potentially reducing the economic burden on patients while improving outcomes compared to current anti-VEGF therapies. As of April 2025, NT-101 is in Phase I/II clinical trials for wet AMD in the United States[1][2][3][4][5][7][8].
