NT-3-expressing neural stem cells are genetically modified or otherwise engineered neural stem cells that produce and secrete neurotrophin-3 (NT-3), a member of the neurotrophin family of growth factors. NT-3 plays a key role in the survival, proliferation, and differentiation of neuronal cell types and oligodendrocytes. In both preclinical and experimental contexts, NT-3-expressing neural stem cells are designed to enhance neural repair, regeneration, and recovery following central nervous system injury or degeneration by providing a local and sustained source of NT-3, which can drive the differentiation of the stem cells into neurons and oligodendrocytes, support the survival of endogenous neurons, and modulate the microenvironment around the transplant. These cells are being investigated primarily for neuroregenerative indications, such as spinal cord injury, ischemic stroke, and other neurological disorders[1][5].
