Overview

NT-503-3 is an investigational encapsulated cell therapy (ECT) implant developed by Neurotech Pharmaceuticals for the treatment of recurrent choroidal neovascularization (CNV) secondary to age-related macular degeneration (wet AMD). The device uses genetically engineered cells within a semipermeable capsule to continuously secrete a soluble vascular endothelial growth factor receptor protein (sVEGFR), acting as a VEGF antagonist. This approach aims to provide sustained intraocular delivery of anti-VEGF therapy, potentially reducing or eliminating the need for frequent intravitreal injections. The ECT implant is surgically placed into the vitreous cavity and designed for long-term drug release. Clinical trials compared its efficacy and safety against standard-of-care aflibercept (Eylea) injections in patients with wet AMD who had previously responded to anti-VEGF therapies[1][2][5][6].
