Overview

The NTHi-Mcat vaccine (GSK3228836A) is an investigational protein subunit vaccine developed by GSK, specifically designed to prevent exacerbations in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The vaccine targets two major bacterial pathogens associated with respiratory infections and COPD flare-ups: Non-typeable *Haemophilus influenzae* (NTHi) and *Moraxella catarrhalis* (Mcat). The formulation consists of four recombinant surface proteins: three from NTHi (Protein D, Protein E, and PilA) and one from Mcat (Ubiquitous surface protein A2, or UspA2). To enhance the immune response in the target population of older adults and smokers, the vaccine is formulated with GSK's proprietary AS01E adjuvant system, which contains the immunostimulants MPL (3-O-desacyl-4’-monophosphoryl lipid A) and QS-21 (*Quillaja saponaria* fraction 21) in a liposomal carrier.
