**NU-1223** is an experimental drug from the β-carboline family developed as a simplified analog of alstonine. It is a small molecule that acts as a selective agonist of the serotonin 5-HT2C receptor, which is a G protein-coupled receptor abundantly expressed in the central nervous system. NU-1223 demonstrates properties similar to certain atypical antipsychotic drugs, but with a 5-HT2C receptor agonist mechanism. It has been shown preclinically to rescue memory deficits and improve both positive and negative symptoms in rodent models of schizophrenia, particularly those induced by phencyclidine (PCP). Unlike some antipsychotic drugs, it does not induce weight gain in animal models, a common side effect related to 5-HT2C receptor antagonism. The drug is not yet approved and has only been tested in preclinical or investigational settings, primarily for potential application in schizophrenia[1][3][5][7].
