NuCel is an allogeneic, cryopreserved allograft derived from human amnion and amniotic fluid, containing mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), growth factors, and cytokines. In the context of the Augusta University (formerly Georgia Regents University) study, NuCel is embedded within a collagen matrix carrier to treat acute and chronic wounds. The therapy works by delivering MSCs that secrete therapeutically relevant proteins and growth factors, promoting tissue regeneration, accelerating wound maturation, and facilitating the integration of the collagen scaffold into the wound bed. This combination is designed to shorten total healing time compared to standard collagen matrices alone. NuCel was originally developed by Nutech Medical, which was later acquired by Organogenesis.
