NUL-5 is a novel topical blend composed of 0.2% tropoelastin and 1 ng/mL hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) designed to promote hair growth. It functions by prolonging the anagen (growth) phase of the hair cycle and strengthening dermal papilla inductivity. Mechanistically, NUL-5 upregulates Wnt signaling, increases elastin deposition in the hair follicle extracellular matrix (specifically in the bulge-associated connective tissue sheath and dermal papilla), and enhances hair matrix keratinocyte proliferation. It also modulates key hair cycle regulators by increasing alkaline phosphatase activity and decreasing the secretion of the Wnt inhibitor DKK1, while also showing a trend toward declining TGF-β2 expression, a promoter of the catagen phase.
