Overview
NutriLock is a non-antibiotic catheter lock solution developed by Transcutan (TauroLock GmbH) specifically for patients receiving parenteral nutrition. It is designed to prevent catheter-related bloodstream infections (CRBSI) and maintain catheter patency by preventing occlusions. The solution contains taurolidine, a broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent that prevents biofilm formation by reacting with bacterial cell wall components, and 4% citrate, which serves as an anticoagulant by chelating calcium. NutriLock is particularly useful in home parenteral nutrition (HPN) settings where it provides a safe alternative to heparin, avoiding risks such as heparin-induced thrombocytopenia. It is intended for use in the dead space of central venous catheters between treatments.
