Nuvaxovid (NVX-CoV2373) is a protein-based, recombinant nanoparticle vaccine developed by Novavax for the prevention of COVID-19. It consists of the full-length SARS-CoV-2 spike (rS) protein, produced using a baculovirus/insect cell expression system and assembled into nanoparticles. The vaccine is formulated with Novavax's proprietary Matrix-M adjuvant, a saponin-based adjuvant derived from the bark of the Quillaja saponaria tree, which enhances the magnitude and breadth of the immune response by stimulating the recruitment of antigen-presenting cells and increasing antigen presentation in local lymph nodes. Nuvaxovid induces both neutralizing antibodies and cellular immune responses (T-cell responses) against the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein. It is typically administered as a two-dose primary series, with updated formulations developed to target emerging variants such as Omicron BA.5 and JN.1.
