Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Nuvocept is a novel multiphasic oral contraceptive being developed by Arstat Pharmaceuticals specifically for women with overweight and obesity (high BMI). As a small molecule combined hormonal contraceptive, it utilizes a regimen of gradually increasing hormonal doses while maintaining a constant progestin-to-estrogen ratio. This design is intended to improve contraceptive efficacy and reduce side effects in women with high BMI, a population that often experiences reduced hormone absorption and lower effective doses (70-80% of intended levels) with standard oral contraceptives. Nuvocept is the first oral contraceptive to receive FDA endorsement for a clinical program and labeling focused exclusively on women with overweight and obesity. The drug is currently Phase III-ready.
