Nux vomica is a natural product derived from the seeds of the Strychnos nux-vomica tree, native to India and Southeast Asia. The seeds contain potent alkaloids—primarily strychnine and brucine—which are highly toxic. In traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda and Unani, as well as in homeopathy, nux vomica has been used for a wide range of conditions including digestive complaints (constipation, indigestion), headaches and migraines, stress-related symptoms (anxiety, irritability), insomnia, menstrual problems, back pain, male infertility/impotence and hangovers[1][3][4][6][8]. However, there is no robust scientific evidence supporting its efficacy for these uses[1][3][4]. The mechanism of action is primarily due to strychnine’s effect on the central nervous system; it acts as an antagonist at glycine receptors in the spinal cord and brainstem. This leads to increased neuronal excitability resulting in muscle contractions that can progress to convulsions or death at higher doses[1]. Homeopathic preparations are extremely diluted but products containing measurable amounts of seed extract are considered unsafe due to toxicity risks. Nux vomica is banned or severely restricted in many countries because even small amounts can cause severe side effects including restlessness, anxiety, dizziness, muscle stiffness/spasms (notably jaw/neck), seizures/convulsions respiratory failure or death[1][2][3].
