NV-HHV-1 is a novel antiviral drug candidate developed by NanoViricides for the treatment of herpesvirus infections, including shingles (herpes zoster), HSV-1 (cold sores), and HSV-2 (genital ulcers). It is being advanced as both a topical skin cream and an oral formulation. The drug belongs to the nanoviricide class—a unique type of biomimetic nanomaterial designed to mimic host cell features that viruses use for attachment. By doing so, it "fools" the virus into binding to the nanoviricide instead of human cells; once attached, the flexible nanoviricide wraps around and dismantles the virus particle directly, neutralizing it without immune system assistance. Preclinical studies have shown activity against HSV-1, HSV-2, VZV (varicella-zoster virus), and potentially other herpesviruses such as CMV, HHV-6, and HHV-8[2][3][4][5][7][8]. The skin cream formulation has completed IND-enabling studies for shingles rash and cold sores[3][4], while an oral version is in development for systemic herpesvirus infections[7].
