Overview

NVC-320 is a synthetic, small-molecule antimicrobial agent belonging to the Aganocide class, developed by NovaBay Pharmaceuticals. It is designed to mimic the natural antimicrobial molecules, such as hypochlorous acid and N-chlorotaurine, produced by neutrophils during the innate immune response's oxidative burst. NVC-320 was primarily investigated as an ophthalmic solution for the treatment of adenoviral conjunctivitis (pink eye), a highly contagious viral infection for which no specific antiviral therapy is currently approved. The compound's mechanism involves the non-selective oxidation of microbial proteins and nucleic acids, leading to rapid pathogen inactivation without the high risk of resistance associated with traditional antibiotics. Despite reaching Phase 2 clinical trials, development was terminated in 2014 as NovaBay shifted its strategic focus toward the commercialization of its eyelid hygiene product, Avenova, and other dermatology assets.
