NVN1000

NVN1000 is a topical nitric oxide-releasing gel developed by Novan, Inc. (now part of Ligand Pharmaceuticals) for the treatment of external genital and perianal warts caused by human papillomavirus (HPV). The product utilizes Novan's proprietary Nitricil technology, which incorporates berdazimer sodium—a macromolecular silica scaffold—to store and release nitric oxide (NO) upon application to the skin. Nitric oxide acts as a broad-spectrum antiviral agent by inhibiting viral DNA replication and protein synthesis, while also modulating the local immune response to facilitate the clearance of HPV-infected cells. NVN1000 has been evaluated in Phase 2 clinical trials, demonstrating efficacy in reducing wart area and achieving complete clearance in patients with external genital and perianal warts.
