Overview

NVP022 is a preclinical small-molecule drug candidate from NeuroVive Pharmaceutical (now Abliva) being developed for non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) as part of the company’s mitochondrial medicine portfolio.[1][3][7][10][11] It is described as a novel, liver-targeted protonophore that acts as a mild mitochondrial uncoupler in hepatocytes, aiming to improve hepatic energy metabolism and other metabolic components of NASH rather than acting primarily through direct antifibrotic mechanisms like NeuroVive’s cyclophilin inhibitors.[3][9][10][11] By partially uncoupling oxidative phosphorylation in liver mitochondria, NVP022 is intended to increase energy expenditure and modulate mitochondrial metabolic pathways implicated in fatty liver disease, offering a mechanistically distinct and potentially complementary approach to other NASH therapies such as NV556.[1][2][5][7][9][10][11]
