Drug intelligence / Profile preview
NVX-508 is an investigational oxygen-carrying perfluorocarbon emulsion developed by NuvOx Pharma specifically for the treatment of sickle cell disease (SCD). The formulation consists of dodecafluoropentane (DDFP) droplets that act as a highly efficient oxygen transport vehicle. Upon intravenous administration, these droplets facilitate the transfer of oxygen from the lungs to the blood and from red blood cells to hypoxic tissues. By enhancing oxygen delivery to diseased tissues, NVX-508 aims to prevent the polymerization of sickle hemoglobin, thereby reducing the sickling of red blood cells and mitigating clinical complications such as vaso-occlusive episodes (VOE) and acute chest syndrome (ACS). It is currently being evaluated in a Phase 1b dose-finding study led by investigators at the University of Pittsburgh to establish safety and the maximum tolerated dose in patients with steady-state sickle cell disease.
