NXP002 is a preclinical-stage inhaled small molecule drug candidate being developed by Nuformix for the treatment of Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF) and Progressive Pulmonary Fibrosis (PPF). The drug is a proprietary formulation of tranilast, a repurposed anti-fibrotic agent with a history of use as an oral allergy medication. NXP002 is designed for delivery via a nebulizer, allowing for high local concentrations in the lungs while minimizing systemic exposure and potential side effects. Its mechanism of action involves the inhibition of TGF-β/SMAD2-mediated signaling, which suppresses the production of extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins and regulates other mediators of fibrosis. NXP002 has received Orphan Drug Designation for the treatment of IPF from both the European Medicines Agency (EMA) and the U.S. FDA.
