nyasol

Nyasol, also known as cis-hinokiresinol, is a naturally occurring norlignan phytoestrogen isolated from plants such as *Anemarrhena asphodeloides* and *Hypoxis nyasica*. It acts as a selective estrogen receptor beta (ERβ) agonist, specifically functioning as an ERβ activator that binds to both ERα and ERβ but selectively induces gene transcription through ERβ. Nyasol has been investigated preclinically for its anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic, skin-whitening, and anti-cancer properties, particularly in hormone-therapy-resistant breast cancer. The compound was patented and developed by Bionovo, Inc. for the treatment of estrogen receptor-mediated diseases, but active development was discontinued following Bionovo's bankruptcy in 2012.
