Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Mycostatin oral suspension is a brand-name formulation of nystatin, a polyene macrolide antifungal small molecule drug. Its active ingredient is nystatin, which is obtained from *Streptomyces noursei*. The drug works by binding to ergosterol in the fungal cell membrane, creating pores that cause leakage of intracellular contents (such as potassium ions), resulting in fungistatic or fungicidal effects. It is active against most pathogenic *Candida* species, including *Candida albicans*. The oral suspension is primarily indicated for the local treatment of oropharyngeal candidiasis (oral thrush) and related fungal infections of the mouth and gastrointestinal tract. Additionally, it is being investigated by National Taiwan University Hospital in a Phase 2 randomized trial as a perioperative gargle to reduce anastomotic leakage in patients undergoing esophagectomy for esophageal cancer.
