NZ-C1909 is a recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 (rhBMP-2) being developed by Nippon Zoki Pharmaceutical. As an osteoinductive protein, it acts by binding to bone morphogenetic protein receptors on the surface of mesenchymal stem cells, triggering a signaling cascade that induces their differentiation into osteoblasts. This process promotes the formation of new bone tissue. NZ-C1909 is currently in Phase III clinical development in Japan specifically for use in lumbar interbody fusion procedures. In these surgeries, the protein is typically packed into interbody cages to facilitate stable bone fusion in patients suffering from degenerative lumbar disease, serving as a potential alternative to autologous bone grafting.
