Overview

Oat avenanthramides are a group of natural di-phenolic compounds found exclusively in oats (*Avena sativa*), developed as a multi-functional active ingredient by Cosciens Biopharma (formed by the merger of Ceapro and Aeterna Zentaris). These compounds possess potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. They are utilized across three primary sectors: as a cosmeceutical ingredient in skincare products (such as Aveeno and Burt's Bees) to soothe irritated skin and reduce redness; as a nutraceutical in development for managing exercise-induced inflammation; and as a pharmaceutical candidate. The pharmaceutical formulation is currently in Phase 2a clinical trials for the treatment of vascular inflammation and cardiovascular health conditions. Mechanistically, avenanthramides modulate pro-inflammatory gene expression and signal transduction pathways, leading to a reduction in pro-inflammatory cytokines, chemokines, and biomarkers like C-reactive protein (CRP).
