Overview
The oat-containing glycerin skin protectant ointment (Oat+Gly) is a topical therapeutic formulation developed for the treatment of dry skin conditions and the enhancement of skin resiliency. Developed by researchers at Kenvue (formerly Johnson & Johnson Consumer Health), the ointment combines the humectant properties of glycerin with the bioactive components of *Avena sativa* (oat). Mechanistically, the formulation promotes the restoration of Natural Moisturizing Factors (NMFs) by enhancing the processing of filaggrin into its degradation products, such as pyrrolidone carboxylic acid (PCA) and urocanic acid (UCA). Additionally, it helps preserve hyaluronic acid (HA) levels within the skin, particularly against UV-induced degradation. Clinical data from a 3-week regression study indicate that the ointment significantly improves visual dryness, tactile roughness, and skin hydration compared to standard petrolatum-based ointments, while offering superior aesthetic qualities such as faster absorption and a non-greasy feel.
