Obese adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells are multipotent stromal/stem cells isolated from the adipose tissue of individuals with obesity (typically defined as BMI >30). These cells share many phenotypic and functional characteristics with bone marrow–derived mesenchymal stem cells but may exhibit altered metabolic and immunomodulatory properties due to the donor's obesity status. Obesity can impact their autophagy pathways, senescence profile, differentiation potential, and gene expression patterns. Obese ADSCs have been studied for their roles in regenerative medicine, cell therapy research, and as models for understanding how obesity affects cellular function. They express typical MSC markers such as CD29, CD44, CD73, CD90, and CD105 while lacking hematopoietic markers like CD14 or CD45[2][3]. Their mechanism of action is primarily through paracrine signaling—secreting cytokines/growth factors that modulate inflammation and promote tissue repair—but these functions may be impaired or altered in the context of obesity[1][2].
