Overview
Obiltoxaximab is a chimeric (mouse/human) IgG1 kappa monoclonal antibody used for the treatment and prevention of inhalational anthrax caused by Bacillus anthracis. It is indicated in combination with appropriate antibacterial drugs for both the treatment of inhalational anthrax and post-exposure prophylaxis when alternative therapies are not suitable or available. Obiltoxaximab works by binding to the protective antigen (PA) component of B. anthracis toxin, inhibiting its interaction with cellular receptors, thereby preventing intracellular entry of lethal factor and edema factor—the enzymatic components responsible for the pathogenic effects of anthrax toxin. This neutralizes the toxic effects and increases survival following exposure[1][2][5][6][7].
