Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Ocean Biomedical is developing a multivalent mRNA-based malaria vaccine targeting the blood-stage of the *Plasmodium falciparum* lifecycle. Led by Scientific Co-founder Dr. Jonathan Kurtis, the vaccine utilizes lipid-encapsulated messenger RNA (mRNA) technology to deliver genetic instructions for the *Plasmodium falciparum* glutamic acid-rich protein (PfGARP). PfGARP is a unique protein expressed on the surface of infected red blood cells; by targeting this protein, the vaccine induces an immune response that triggers the destruction of the parasite within the red blood cell, preventing its exit and subsequent infection of other cells. Preclinical data in non-human primates has shown over 90% parasite killing, and the company anticipates initiating human clinical trials by the fourth quarter of 2025.
