Overview

OCID-18483 is a preclinical-stage, extended-spectrum carbapenem antibiotic being developed by Orchid Pharma. It is specifically designed to address severe infections caused by multi-drug resistant (MDR) gram-negative bacteria, including strains that produce Extended-Spectrum Beta-Lactamases (ESBLs), Klebsiella pneumoniae carbapenemases (KPCs), and Metallo-Beta-Lactamases (MBLs). Like other carbapenems, OCID-18483 functions by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis through the binding and inhibition of penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), which are essential for peptidoglycan cross-linking. Its broad-spectrum activity against various carbapenemases, particularly MBLs which often evade standard carbapenem therapy, makes it a potential candidate for treating high-unmet-need hospital-acquired infections.
