Ocimum gratissimum extract is derived from the leaves of the plant Ocimum gratissimum, commonly known as clove basil or African basil. It contains a range of bioactive phytochemicals and essential oils, including oleanolic acid, caffeic acid, rosmarinic acid, luteolin, quercetin, eugenol, β-caryophyllene, linalool, and thymol. The extract has shown antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, hepatoprotective, antidiabetic, antihypertensive, antidiarrheal, and antimicrobial activities in various in vitro and in vivo studies. Mechanistically, these effects are attributed to inhibition of matrix metalloproteinases, reduction of oxidative stress, modulation of apoptotic pathways (caspase-3, PARP, Bax/Bcl-2), and direct antimicrobial action, primarily due to constituents like eugenol. The extract is widely used in traditional medicine for the treatment of infections, inflammation, diabetes, cancer, and gastrointestinal disorders[1][3][4][6][7].
