Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Ocimum tenuiflorum top is the aerial part (leaf and stem) of the plant commonly known as holy basil or tulsi. It is widely used in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda and Siddha for its adaptogenic (stress-reducing), anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antimicrobial (antibacterial and antifungal), antidiabetic, immunomodulatory, cardioprotective, analgesic (pain-relieving), antispasmodic and hepatoprotective properties[1][3][4][5][6][7][10]. The main active constituents include eugenol and other polyphenols. Mechanistically, it acts through multiple pathways including modulation of oxidative stress responses and immune function. It is not an approved pharmaceutical drug but is found in some over-the-counter topical products for skin conditions such as eczema or ringworm[1][8]. Clinical studies suggest benefits for metabolic disorders (e.g., diabetes), cardiovascular health, psychological stress reduction/anxiolysis and wound healing support[4].
