Overview

OCLX-001 is an adeno-associated virus (AAV)-based gene therapy being developed by Oculogenex for the treatment of intermediate age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The therapy delivers the BMI1 gene, which encodes an epigenetic master regulator that promotes cellular renewal, protects against oxidative stress, and enhances cellular metabolism. By targeting patients at the intermediate stage of AMD, OCLX-001 aims to strengthen retinal cells and prevent irreversible vision loss. The treatment is designed as a one-time intraocular injection, utilizing a proprietary precision suprachoroidal delivery device (OCLX-SCDD) to target the subretinal space. Beyond AMD, the BMI1 platform has potential applications in other degenerative retinal conditions, such as diabetic retinopathy.
