OCT-PEG-MNPs is an experimental, SSTR2-targeted multimodal imaging nanoprobe comprising melanin nanoparticles coated with polyethylene glycol and surface-conjugated octreotide. Octreotide directs the nanoprobe to somatostatin receptor type 2-expressing small-cell lung cancer cells, while the melanin nanoparticle core provides intrinsic photoacoustic contrast and can chelate manganese for MRI contrast and be radioiodinated with iodine-124 for PET imaging. It was evaluated after intravenous administration in NCI-H69 small-cell lung cancer xenografts and remains a preclinical diagnostic imaging agent.
