OctaAlpha1 is a highly purified, human plasma-derived alpha-1-antitrypsin (AAT) concentrate developed by Octapharma. It is intended for augmentation therapy in patients with alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency (AATD), a genetic condition that results in low serum levels of AAT and predisposes individuals to early-onset emphysema and liver disease. OctaAlpha1 acts as a serine protease inhibitor, primarily neutralizing neutrophil elastase in the lungs to prevent the proteolytic degradation of alveolar tissue. Clinical development has focused on demonstrating its pharmacokinetic profile and safety, often in comparison to established AAT products like Glassia, to support its use in maintaining protective levels of AAT in the lower respiratory tract.
