Octacosanol is a naturally occurring long-chain aliphatic alcohol primarily found in plant waxes, such as those derived from sugarcane, wheat germ oil, rice bran, and beeswax. It is a major component of policosanol, a mixture of similar long-chain alcohols. Octacosanol has been investigated for its potential to reduce low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol and increase high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, improve athletic performance, and address conditions like Parkinson's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), herpes infections, and skin diseases. While some studies suggest benefits in lipid metabolism, antioxidant activity, and anti-inflammatory effects, the scientific evidence supporting many of its purported uses, particularly for athletic performance and ALS, is limited or insufficient. It is commonly marketed and consumed as a dietary supplement and nutraceutical.
