Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Octanedioic acid (also known as suberic acid or DC8) is an eight-carbon medium-chain dicarboxylic acid. It is being investigated as a potential therapeutic and dietary supplement for the prevention and treatment of acute kidney injury (AKI). Preclinical research, primarily led by the University of Pittsburgh, has shown that octanedioic acid supplementation drives renal hypersuccinylation, promoting a metabolic shift from mitochondrial to peroxisomal fatty acid oxidation (FAO). This metabolic bypass supports cellular resilience and protects proximal renal tubule cells from oxidative stress and damage caused by ischemia-reperfusion injury or nephrotoxic chemotherapeutic agents like cisplatin. Additionally, octanedioic acid has been studied for its role in skin health, where it acts as an agonist of olfactory receptors (such as OR10A3 and Olfr544) to stimulate collagen production and alleviate skin dryness.
