Octaplas

Octaplas is a solvent/detergent (S/D)-treated, pooled human plasma product developed by Octapharma. It is derived from large pools of human plasma (630 to 1,520 donor units) and is designed to provide a standardized, virus-inactivated alternative to fresh frozen plasma (FFP). Its primary mechanism in treating thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) involves providing the enzyme ADAMTS13, which is deficient or inhibited in TTP patients, thereby allowing for the cleavage of ultra-large von Willebrand factor (ULVWF) multimers and resolving microvascular thrombosis. It is also indicated for the replacement of multiple coagulation factors in patients with acquired deficiencies, such as those with liver disease or those undergoing cardiac surgery or liver transplantation. The S/D treatment process effectively inactivates lipid-enveloped viruses, reducing the risk of transfusion-transmitted infections.
