The octavalent human papillomavirus L1 virus-like particle vaccine is a prophylactic vaccine under development, designed to provide broader protection against multiple human papillomavirus (HPV) types. It is composed of non-infectious virus-like particles (VLPs) assembled from the L1 capsid protein of eight specific HPV types. These VLPs mimic the structure of natural HPV virions, stimulating the immune system to produce type-specific neutralizing antibodies. This immune response aims to prevent initial HPV infection, thereby reducing the risk of HPV-related diseases, including cervical, anal, vulvar, vaginal, and head and neck cancers, as well as precancerous lesions and genital warts. The vaccine is being developed to potentially include HPV types with a higher impact in African and Asian populations.
