Octenident is an antiseptic mouthwash containing octenidine dihydrochloride as its primary active ingredient. Developed by Schülke & Mayr, it is a broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent used for the decontamination of the oral cavity and the management of oral biofilms. It is effective against a wide range of pathogens, including Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, fungi, and certain viruses. The drug's mechanism of action involves the disruption of microbial cell membranes through the binding of the cationic octenidine molecule to negatively charged cell wall components, leading to cell lysis. Octenident is frequently used in clinical settings for MRSA decontamination of the oral cavity and as a therapeutic rinse to reduce inflammation in patients with periodontitis or peri-implantitis. While commercially available in some regions as a cosmetic oral hygiene product, it is actively investigated for therapeutic efficacy against specific oral infestations such as *Entamoeba gingivalis*.
