OD-141309 is a topical antiseptic drug candidate being developed by Zaycor Healthcare, primarily for use as a preoperative skin disinfection preparation. The active ingredient is octenidine dihydrochloride, a bispyridinamine antiseptic with broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, fungi, and certain viruses. Octenidine works by binding to the negatively charged cell surfaces of microorganisms, leading to membrane disruption and cell death. Unlike some other antiseptics, it exhibits persistent antimicrobial activity and has a favorable safety profile with low systemic absorption. Zaycor is evaluating OD-141309 in clinical trials to support its approval in the United States, where octenidine is not yet widely available for preoperative use.
