Overview

Octinoxate is an organic compound and cinnamate ester widely used as a chemical UVB filter in sunscreens and other personal care products. It was originally developed in the 1950s to absorb UVB rays from sunlight, thereby minimizing DNA photodamage and reducing the risk of sunburn and skin cancer. Octinoxate works by absorbing ultraviolet radiation (UVB, wavelengths between approximately 280–320 nm) and converting it into less harmful energy[1][2][5][8]. It is oil-soluble, often combined with other filters for broad-spectrum protection, and approved for use in many countries including the US, EU, Canada, Australia, and Japan[7][8]. Octinoxate may also be found in cosmetics such as lip balms, moisturizers, hair care products, nail polish, and skin creams to protect both skin and product integrity from UV degradation[3][5]. Mechanistically it acts as a sunscreen agent by absorbing UVB light; recent research suggests it can also inhibit cytochrome P450 enzymes CYP1A1 and CYP1B1 involved in aryl hydrocarbon receptor signaling[6]. There are some concerns about its potential endocrine-disrupting effects based on animal studies; however regulatory agencies continue to approve its use at specified concentrations while further safety data are collected[3][7].
